Pdf Summary
GlorIA is a University of the Greater Metropolitan (UGM) platform for clinical training in psychology that uses generative AI to simulate virtual patients through written interviews. Its name pays tribute to “Gloria,” the real patient filmed in 1965 in classic psychotherapy sessions with Carl Rogers, Fritz Perls, and Albert Ellis—sessions that helped generations of students learn by observation. GlorIA updates that legacy by turning observation into repeated, deliberate practice: students can interview a virtual patient, make mistakes safely, and repeat cases as needed.

The system includes configurable virtual patient profiles, a turn-based clinical conversation, and a full transcript for supervision and review. It is explicitly designed as a complementary resource, not a replacement for human instructors or real clinical practice.

GlorIA operates within UGM’s AI LAB governance structure, which includes ethics, data protection, curriculum integration, research, and institutional alignment. Technically, it uses an orchestrated AI architecture based on CAG/RAG principles: responses are conditioned on retrieved clinical knowledge, the patient’s current state, and longitudinal history. A semantic knowledge base, adaptive state engine, and orchestration layer help reduce hallucinations, preserve safety, and ensure traceability.

The platform also automates evaluation: natural language processing analyzes transcripts, classifies communicative acts, and links performance to a validated clinical rubric. Human instructors review and approve feedback before it is sent.

Early evidence is promising: in a 2025 UGM study with 52 students and 288 clinical interactions, performance improved significantly across six competency dimensions. Student feedback highlights reduced fear, better structure, and greater creativity. External validation includes high satisfaction, multicountry pilots, conference acceptance, and recognition in innovation rankings and awards.
